Beginning Mixed Ensemble - This ensemble is comprised mostly of underclassmen, males and females. This is an entry level course leading to other advanced ensembles. Students must have a teacher recommendation and/or approval from director to register for this course. Students are required to take the course for Fall and Spring Semesters. Mixed Ensemble studies a wide variety of repertoire and works to build vocal techniques and music reading skills. Mixed Ensemble performs in two concerts a year, and attends Festival at Meredith College each spring.
Intermediate Chorale - This ensemble is comprised mostly of second year students, male and female. Students must have a teacher recommendation and/or approval from director to register for this course. Students are required to take the course for Fall and Spring Semesters. Intermediate Chorale studies a wide variety of repertoire and works to build vocal techniques and music reading skills. Intermediate Chorale performs in two concerts a year, attends Festival at Meredith College each spring, and the Music in the Parks Festival in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Die Meistersingers - This mixed ensemble is made up of about 40 auditioned Juniors and Seniors. Students must demonstrate an advanced level of music reading and vocal technique in order to be placed in this choir. Students are required to register for both semesters, and may audition each spring for the following school year. Die Meistersingers studies a wide variety of very challenging repertoire and performs at Large Ensemble Festival each spring at Meredith College. This group also performs at numerous events throughout the year in our community. Die Meistersingers has represented GMHS at the Raleigh Capitol, the Governor's Mansion, the Moravian Candle Tea Ceremony, First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh and more. This group also travels each spring to participate in a music festival. In the past few years, Die Meistersingers has performed in Williamsburg, Virginia, Orlando, Florida, Atlanta, Georgia, and St. John the Divine Cathedral in New York City. The choir accepted a special invitation to the Festival of Gold National Heritage Music Festival in Chicago, Illinois in 2010. They had the privilege of working with some of the finest conductors in the world, as well as performing at Chicago Symphony Hall in Fourth Presbyterian Church. The ensemble has consistently been awarded First Place, Best Overall Choir, and has received "Superior" ratings from each Festival. The Die Meistersingers have also consistently received "Superior" ratings in performance and sight-reading at the NCMEA High School Large Ensemble District Festival. In February of 2012, the Die Meistersingers will make their debut performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts under the direction of Dr. Andre J. Thomas.
Spring Musical - Presented by the GMHS Fine Arts Department each year
GMHS Choral Department also participates each year in the folllowing :
- Wake County All County Chorus - Available to select students
- NC All-State Chorus - Available to select students
- NC Honors Chorus - Available to select students that must audition for the state.
