First Semester Objectives:
By mid-term exams, all choral students will be able to:
- Count and perform rhythms in simple meter.
- Identify notes on the staff in treble and bass clef.
- Identify solfege syllables in an exercise when given “do.”
- Perform a major scale using solfege syllables, hand signs, and with numbers.
- Perform sight reading exercises with others in at least 2 parts.
- Perform a variety of music in a historically and stylistically correct manner.
- Have a working musical vocabulary including, but not limited to, vocabulary related to rhythm, notation, dynamics, and tempo.
- Exemplify proper choral technique with regard to posture and vocal production.
Assessment:
- Students will have a written mid-term exam covering these areas of music theory and vocabulary, which will count 20% of their Quarter grade.
- Students will perform in a concert setting.
- Students will create their own rhythm and notation exercises
- Students will perform sight reading exercises together in class.
- Students will compile a developmental workbook to meet MYP criteria.
Second Semester Objectives:
At final exam time, all choral students will be able to:
- Exemplify, at a more advanced level all skills assessed at mid-term.
- Perform sight reading exercises with others in 2-4 parts.
- Perform a variety of music from varied cultures and in foreign languages.
- Identify important composers and give characteristics of musical genres and historical periods.
Assessment:
- Students will have a performance final exam, in which they will prepare and perform a solo for their ensemble.
- Students will perform in small groups (quartets, trios) for a quiz grade.
- Students will perform in multiple concert settings.
- Students will research a genre of music, or a composer and give a presentation to their classmates.
- Students will turn in their developmental workbook for MYP criteria.
